LEO ON A GREEN MISSION

In April 2010, kids from ten kindergartens had the privilege to learn about preserving the environment with Leo the Lion. Sunway Pyramid’s friendly mascot recently was on a mission coded, ‘Go Green with Leo’.

Go Green with Leo scouted areas like Tadika Eden, Tadika Cerdik Cemerlang (Bandar Utama), REAL Kids (Subang Jaya vicinity), Kinderland (Putra Heights & Subang Jaya), Krista Pusat Bandar Puchong and Taska Precious Lambs. In the end, Go Green Leo reached over 1,000 children with its aim of educating the children on going green!

“It’s never too early to learn about the importance of preserving our Earth,” said Ms Phang Sau Lian, Marketing Director of Sunway Pyramid. “In our bid to educate young minds on the significance of saving the environment, Sunway Pyramid has chosen Leo the Lion as the mall’s green ambassador, to different kindergartens around the Klang Valley.”

“With a mascot figure like Leo the Lion, we believe that children will find learning about going green much easier,” Ms Phang added.

Although it may be sound like another environmental campaign but gauging from the kids’ responses, it’s more than just classroom talk! Judging from their young looks, they were all smiles and laughter as they found the lessons and activities engaging and interactive.

The children were taught on the importance of the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Not doing so would mean that our Earth would suffer the consequences of our misdeeds. Taking example from the movie “Wall-E”, our Earth stood a chance to end up like that if humans do not do their part.

On top of the refreshing green reminders, children were invited to try it out themselves. Using the three recycling bins – paper, glass and plastic –children volunteers randomly chosen had a go with various trashes inserted into the respective bin’s classification.

Then, the kids were tested to a recycling game where things turned practical. Grouped into teams, each team have to pick up the trash, run to the other end with the three bins and segregate the trash. The team with the highest trash in the right respective bins win.

On top of that, they were exposed to several insights that city children would never have experienced. There was Burmese albino python and Malaysia-bred Amazon racoon made appearances. Working with Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Pyramid had the team from the theme park’s wildlife division teaching the children that if no one looked after the environment, these creatures along with their habitat would inevitably be destroyed. On top of that, the racoon put on a show for the children by showing them that animals knew about recycling by picking up trashes and disposing into the recycle bin.

Each kindergarten was rewarded with donuts and cookies courtesy of J CO Donuts and Subway, respectively. They generously sponsored the snacks as Leo and his team ventured out. Sunway Pyramid Ice, Shojikiya, MPH Bookstores and Tupperware Brands were also sponsors. Sunway Lagoon was the official partner for ‘Go Green with Leo’.

Besides that, the children got complimentary DIY recycling bin each, where they can bring home and start the green habit when they are still young.

‘Go Green with Leo’ is under the Sunway Pyramid’s Earth Pal campaign, an effort dedicated to create environmental awareness amongst community within the Klang Valley.
